Myotherapy is  the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal disorders and conditions.

It is an evidence-based branch of manual therapy.

Treatments target the symptoms and causes of pain and movement dysfunction of the muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves - although most importantly the brain!

Our treatment techniques centre around soft tissue therapy, pain education and management, corrective exercises and rehabilitation, respiration (breathing) patterning and neurodynamic mobilisation exercises.

We are also qualified to use stretching, myofascial release, dry needling, MET, cold and thermal therapy if suitable for a specific pain complaint - although we prefer to place greater emphasis on ‘active’ (patient-lead) rather than passive (therapist-lead) treatment modalities in our clinic.

We do not aim to create dependance on our treatments to ensure you remain pain free - our goal is to facilitate and support a healing process that YOU have independent control over.

Common conditions:

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Jaw/TMJ dysfunction and pain / clenching / grinding

  • Neck and upper back pain

  • Vertigo, Dizziness

  • Low back pain & ‘Sciatica'

  • Hip injuries / impingement / Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

  • Sporting injuries

  • Postural advice

  • Chronic / persistent pain

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Trauma-related pain

  • Hypermobility syndrome

  • Pelvic Pain & Dysfunction

    And more

Please note: Alongside a pain experience, it is common and normal to experience alterations in your emotional and mental health, including:

  • Anxiety

  • Fear

  • Depression

  • Sadness

  • Loneliness

  • Overwhelm

  • Avoidance

  • Frustration

  • Confusion

  • Mental fog

    And more

Likewise, these conditions can influence your pain experience, as can other common cognitive and functional conditions such as neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism), OCD, BPD etc. Please ask your therapist if you have any questions or are unsure.

We can assist you in identifying how your pain is affecting your emotional and cognitive states, and help you seek the best course of professional support as you heal and recover.

Myotherapy and Massage – What’s the difference?

Myotherapy and massage are two distinct professions, with different aims and objectives, different health fund rebates, and very different educational pathways.

In common with physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors, myotherapists may use soft tissue therapy (massage) in their treatments (when warranted) alongside many other manual therapy (ie. ‘hands’ on) interventions treatment techniques (eg. joint mobilisation, myofascial release, PNF stretching).

Myotherapists utilise a wide range of evidence-based treatment approaches in addition to manual therapy. These may include; rehabilitation programs, exercise prescription, education about pain management, load management, activity and/or lifestyle modification. In addition, Myotherapists also are qualified to use more passive modalities such as dry needling, and thermo and electro-therapeutic techniques.

In common with the aforementioned allied health professions, Myotherapy has it's own separate qualifications, specifically the BHSc (Clinical Myotherapy), BHSc (Myotherapy) and AdvDip (Myotherapy), which qualify practitioners to undertake evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients experiencing musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions.
